Genesis 21 does not begin with Isaac. It begins with God: “The LORD visited Sarah as he had said.” The arrival of the promised son therefore reveals something greater than the gift itself. It reveals the God who speaks and acts, whose faithfulness does not weaken with passing years, and whose promises rest finally upon the constancy of his own character. This earlier reflection considers how God’s fulfilled promises direct our attention beyond what he gives to the faithful God who gives it.
