Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam

The Grass Isn’t Always Greener On the Other Side

What would it take for your life to be better? What would have to change? Sometimes, if not most of the time, we think that our lives would be tremendously better if only we could have….that one thing or that one place. Sadly, we learn far too late that the grass is not always greener on the other side.

Christian, I hope you will find satisfaction in Christ. Galatians and Hebrews were written especially to people who thought they needed to look away for something better. God called them to stay with Christ. “In short, since rich store of every kind of good abounds in him, let us drink our fill from this fountain, and from no other. Some men, not content with him alone, are borne hither and thither from one hope to another; even if they concern themselves chiefly with him, they nevertheless stray from the right way in turning some part of their thinking in another direction. Yet such distrust cannot creep in where men have once for all truly known the abundance of his blessings” (Institutes 2.13.2). Scripture describes Christ as the one “in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Col 2:3).

Since all true treasures are in Christ, we should not be destroyed with grass that may, at times, seem greener on the other side (Col 2:4). Like Moses we should consider “the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt” or whereever else we might turn. Stay with the Lord—all true treasures are in Him.
