Introduction to “He Was Raised on the Third Day According to the Scriptures”

Jesus taught that the entire OT was about him. The OT provides several typological glimpses of Christ. One of these typological glimpses of Christ in the OT is seen in the theme of the “third day” which repeatedly manifests itself in situations where God’s creation or people are delivered from some sort of bondage and … Continue reading Introduction to “He Was Raised on the Third Day According to the Scriptures”

God Has Spoken

Often we wonder what we should do for God in worship. This is, of course, a most excellent question, but I would like to propose that there is an even more fundamental question. “How do we know what we should do in worship?” and/or “How do we know what God requires of us?” Once we … Continue reading God Has Spoken

Have You Seen Noah Lately?

With all the rain, you may have been thinking about Noah. You remember how God “saw that the wickedness of man was great upon the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually” (Gen. 6:5). Because of this the Bible says, “the LORD regretted that he had … Continue reading Have You Seen Noah Lately?

Baptism and Faith

Donnie L. DeBord's avatarDonnie's Dogmatics

Baptism is part of the faith (Romans 6:17-18; Acts 6:7; Romans 1:5; 16:26) . The Bible presents both obedience (including baptism) and knowledge (knowing who Jesus is etc.) as parts of the faith. Paul praised the Thessalonians for their “work of faith” (1 Thess. 1:3). Faith demands action (James 2:24).

This is manifested in the way the word “faithful” is used. 1 Timothy 3:11, for example, says the wives of elders must be “faithful in all things.” In other words, their lives must correspond to their beliefs. They are faithful because of their faith. They would not be counted faithful without believing and obeying the truth. Faithfulness requires appropriate knowledge and appropriate actions.

So what is the relationship between faith and baptism in salvation? Are we saved immediately when we know that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God? Or, are we…

Homoousios or Homoiousios?: Notes on the Deity of Jesus

Homoousios or Homoiousios? The same substance or a similar substance? This is the major question that arose in the 4th century and prompted the first Council of Nicea in which Arius defended his view that Jesus was a creature and that there was, therefore, a time when the Son was not. Athanasius, who wrote … Continue reading Homoousios or Homoiousios?: Notes on the Deity of Jesus

Teach

Christianity is a taught religion. Therefore, two of our highest priorities are to learn and to teach. The word “disciple” refers to one who is a student and carries with it the expectation that the student will someday become a teacher. The word “disciple” is used around 269 times in the Bible. It is an … Continue reading Teach

MODALISM??

Sabellius is remembered as the main protagonist behind sabellian modalism. Sabellian modalism is an ancient heresy which denies the Trinity and advances the doctrine that “Father,” “Son,” and “Spirit” are three different names for the same person or three different roles for the same actor. “In modalism there is one person in the godhead. In … Continue reading MODALISM??

KNOWING THE FATHER THROUGH THE SON

What is God like? The best way for us to know what God is like is to look at the Son. Jesus said, “If you have known me, you have known the Father. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” (Jn. 14:7). Jesus said in Matthew 11:27, “All things are delivered … Continue reading KNOWING THE FATHER THROUGH THE SON

ONWARD CHRISTIAN SOLDIERS

Brothers and sisters, we are at war. The enemy did not need to creep into our midst; he announces himself in our presence every day. We see his acts of terrorism every day in death, evil, pain, tears, jealousy, division, slander, divorce, and the lack of loving allegiance to God our true King. For too … Continue reading ONWARD CHRISTIAN SOLDIERS
