Many carry the quiet thought that God, though great and eternal, must be far away. Perhaps he set the world in motion and then stepped back, letting it spin on its own. Others wonder if he sees our pain, or hears our prayers, or even knows our names. But Scripture sings a different song, and it is a truer and more beautiful one. It tells of a God not only high above the heavens, but also near enough to walk beside us, near enough to carry us through dark valleys, near enough to bind up our wounds.
There are good reasons to believe he is not only involved in the world but actively and lovingly working in it. Let us reflect on five of them.
1. God is the First Cause, and He Has Never Let Go
Everything that exists has a source—and that source is not blind chance or cold force. It is the living God, who spoke and the world came to be. He is not like a clockmaker who builds and walks away. If God were absent, the world would unravel in an instant. Every moment we exist is because he is holding all things together (Col 1:17).
We breathe because he gives breath. We stand because he upholds. Our days are not random—they are watched over. Even the quiet, unseen corners of our lives are there because he wills them to be.
2. We Live, Move, and Have Our Being in Him
Paul once stood before the philosophers of Athens and reminded them that we are not far from God—indeed, we cannot be (Acts 17:28). In him we live. In him we move. Our very being depends on him.
He is not distant. He is present in every place where hearts beat and hopes rise. He is near to the weary mother, the wandering son, the lonely widow, the anxious student. Even when we do not feel him, he is not far. He is present in the ordinary, the difficult, and the joyful. He is never absent.
3. His Promises Hold True in Every Season
God has made promises—and he does not forget them. He has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Heb 13:5), and he does not speak lightly. His covenant is not like the promises we so often break. His word is steadfast, even when ours fails.
Providence means he is not just watching history unfold—he is shaping it for the good of those he loves. If he were not involved, he would not be faithful. But he is faithful, and so we can be sure: the path may twist, but it is not aimless. It leads home.
4. Prayer Would Be Powerless If He Were Absent
If God were not involved, then why would he invite us to pray? Why would the psalms cry out? Why would Jesus teach us to say, “Our Father”? He is a Father who hears. He listens. He acts.
We pray because we believe he is close—and when we pray, he proves it. Not always with quick answers. Not always in the ways we expect. But always in love. There is not a single tear you’ve cried that he has missed. There is not a single whispered prayer that floated off into nothing. They rise to a throne where Christ himself intercedes for you.
5. The Whole World Is Being Led Toward His Purpose
Even when the world feels chaotic, it is not spinning out of control. God is leading all of history—your story included—toward his glory and our good. Christ reigns. He is not waiting passively at the end of history—he is reigning now, subduing all things beneath his feet (1 Cor 15:25).
The good days and the hard days, the losses and the victories, the long nights and the sudden joys—they are not wasted. He is weaving them together, not in confusion, but in wisdom. His hand is at work even when we do not see it. One day, we will look back and see the whole story with wonder.
Conclusion
So do not believe the lie that God is absent. He is involved in your life more deeply than you can know. He is not just a chapter in your story. He is the Author. He is not only the Creator of the world and he is the Keeper of your soul.
Walk on, then, in faith. Lift your eyes when the days are heavy. Trust his hand when the path is unclear. Speak to him, for he hears. Rest in him, for he knows. He who holds the stars also holds your life, and he will not let you go.
