Rediscovering Divine Blessedness: The Key to True Comfort and Joy

For millennia, Christians sung of God’s attributes – His infinity, power, and justice. God is the “Fount of Every Blessing” that tunes our heart for praise. Yet, it is a melody which often goes unheard today. The hymns of Divine blessedness should return when we return to a Scriptural view of God’s nature. Scripture portrays God not just as powerful, but as supremely happy, the overflowing fountain of life (John 1:4). This neglected truth holds immense power, offering a richer theology and a deeper well of comfort for suffering believers.

The Bible paints a beautiful picture of God’s blessedness. He is the ultimate source of all good, eternally rejoicing in his own perfect being (Psalm 145:3). This infinite blessedness spills over, creating and sustaining all life.

Modern theology often emphasizes divine suffering. While God undoubtedly has compassion for our struggles, these revisionist views can downplay his immutability (unchanging nature) and impassibility (inability to suffer). This leads to a God who is remade in the image of the creature. This picture of God is diminished and struggling alongside us rather than providing and saving us.

A God defined by suffering loses the awe-inspiring grandeur cherished for generations for a new type of God who vindicates suffering by suffering rather than providing unchanging comfort. Imagine the comfort a suffering saint draws from knowing their God is not merely sympathetic, but eternally blessed – a wellspring of joy even amidst creation’s groans (Romans 8:22). This blessedness doesn’t negate God’s love, but deepens it. A perfectly content God, overflowing with joy, chooses to love and redeem us.

Furthermore, a focus on Divine Blessedness aligns more faithfully with Scripture. Malachi 3:6 declares, “For I the Lord do not change,” emphasizing His unchanging nature, including His blessedness. Understanding God’s blessedness alongside His love provides a more nuanced picture: He deeply cares for our suffering, yet possesses a joy independent of circumstance.

Divine Blessedness offers a richer foundation for Christian life. It reminds us that true joy isn’t found in fleeting earthly pleasures, but in connection with the eternally blessed God. It fuels genuine worship, not out of obligation, but overflowing with gratitude for a God who delights in His own goodness.

In our world consumed by suffering, remembering the Divine Fountain of Life is a balm for the weary soul. It offers not just empathy, but a transcendent hope – the hope of dwelling in the presence of the eternally blessed One (Psalm 16:11). Let us then sing anew the blessings of divine perfection, praising God’s blessedness, the source of all true joy and comfort.
